Monk Mode Guide (Transform Your Trading in 6 months)
Jul 16, 2023I followed a protocol at the beginning of 2020.
For the past 3 years, I went from making $1000 a month to making $100,000 a month.
That protocol is called Monk Mode.
Some people call it deep work, others call it monk mode
I don't believe in Balance.
Balance = Mediocrity
If you want to work a 9 to 5, get a car and a house and live a somewhat comfortable life, then by all means go ahead - Live a balanced life
But chances are if you are reading this, you don't want an average life.
You want to make so much money that you don't have to work for a boss ever again.
You want to achieve the perks of trading: Time, Financial, and Location Freedom.
What is Monk Mode?
Monk mode is a period of total immersion, full-on beast mode, shutting out distractions
and focusing on achieving specific goals for a designated period of time.
If you feel lost in life or you are in a really bad situation and you want to turn it around fast, you need to try monk mode.
Shut yourself off from the rest of the world during this period of monk mode.
That means saying no when your friends ask you to hang out, and saying no to parties on Friday night.
If you do monk mode for 6 months, you will be able to achieve all the goals that you have set for yourself this year.
My Experience with Monk Mode
In October 2020, I bulked way too much and I became kinda overweight and I was also depressed because I got dumped by this beautiful girl.
At that point in time, I felt lost and purposeless.
I knew I had to change and get my shit together.
So I went into a 6-month monk mode.
I cut my hair short. I started following a productive daily routine.
I would wake up at 7am, meditate for 10 mins then start journaling 3 things I was grateful for.
Then I will start learning how to trade by watching trading courses and reading trading books.
In the afternoon I would do some dumbbells workout for about 30 mins then go for a short 2km run around my house.
I still remember panting heavily after running like 100m.
That was how fat and unfit I was.
After I'm done exercising, I would go work as a waiter in a bar and serve drinks and food from 5pm till 12am.
Sometimes I would skip dinner because there was no time for me to eat dinner.
I did this military routine for about 6 months straight.
After the 6 months, I lost 10kg, and I also developed a mindset of a successful person because of all the self help books I read
Another period of monk mode was in June 2021 when I just started my Youtube channel.
I made it a goal to reach 100k subscribers on YouTube and then I went into a 6 months monk mode of just non-stop content creation, recording videos after videos and brainstorming how to make better videos.
I eventually reached 100k subs after about a year or so
I do monk mode for 6 months every year.
That means I will literally disappear from the world and do deep work for 6 months.
After my monk mode has ended, I will then have fun for the remaining 6 months and go travel the world and party and just focus more on other aspects of my life other than work.
Why do Monk Mode? (Benefits of Monk Mode)
- Improved focus and concentration
- Increased creativity
- Improved productivity
- Reduced stressed levels
- Better decision-making skills
My Monk Mode Protocol
1) Set goals
Success comes from productivity.
Productivity comes from following a defined plan.
Following a defined plan comes from having a clear goal.
Set a specific goal that you want to achieve during this period of monk mode
E.g. learn to trade, Make $10k per mth, become consistently profitable, get funded as a trader
Set SMART Goals:
S - Specific
M - Measurable
A - Achievable
R - Relevant
T - Time-Bound
2) Non-negotiables
10 mins meditation every day
It's not rocket science or even difficult.
But it strengthens the prefrontal cortex, improving reasoning, concentration and problem-solving.
Meditation does not have to be some complicated hippie bullshit.
Just sit on a chair and close your eyes for 10 mins.
During these 10mins, try to focus on the present moment instead of thinking about the past or the future.
Whenever you get distracted by your thoughts, bring your focus back to your breath.
Feel the air going in and out of your nose.
Stay present because the present moment is all you have.
You won’t feel the effect on day 1 or even day 10.
After 2 weeks of daily meditation, you will start to feel the effects. Why am I so calm and relaxed? Why am I so focused now?
Suddenly you will realize that you are no longer getting distracted by Tiktok or mindlessly scrolling Instagram or even porn
Exercise at least 45 mins everyday
You don't want to be that old rich fat guy.
You want to be a high value person who is both rich and attractive
There’s a reason wealthy guys tend to look good too
You don't have to do crazy cross fit or run marathons.
Just get out of your house, raise your heart rate. Every. Single. Day.
(Especially when you don’t want to)
For me I will hit the gym for about 45 to 90 mins and I will push my body to the limits and concentrate on mind muscle connection
I’m currently doing the Push/Pull/Legs split (btw if you are wondering)
4 to 6 hours Deep Work Blocks
The whole point of you getting onto Monk Mode is so that you can achieve all the goals you have set for yourself this year so get to work.
Do something every day that gets you 1 step closer to your goal.
Let’s say your goal is to become a consistently profitable trader.
Here’s what you should do:
Learn everything you can about trading
Follow your trading plan religiously
Practice as much as possible on demo or live account
Journal and record every trade
Learn from your losses and mistakes
Now I’m not telling you to go out there and work for 4 hours to 6 hours straight in one sitting. (this is impossible unless you are a total nerd or billionaire)
Split the work blocks into 2-hour work blocks.
Do deep work for 2 hours. Then take a short break.
Have your lunch. Go for a walk. Exercise.
Then do another deep work block for 2 hours.
How you schedule these work blocks is totally up to you because you might work best in the morning or at night.
3) Other Variables/Habits
These are some of the habits that I do in monk mode.
It’s totally optional for you to implement them but if you want your monk mode to work the best, try implementing these habits as well:
- Eat healthy and stick to proper diet
- Intermittent fasting
- Gratitude Journaling
- Reading
- Drink 3 to 4 liters of water everyday
- Minimum 7-8 hours of sleep
- Cold shower
- Screen time of less than 2 hrs per day
- Delete YouTube & Instagram off phone
4) Cut Out
Cut out means completely eliminate them.
These are the things you must cut out on Monk Mode because they add absolutely no benefit to your life:
- Mindless scrolling on social media
- Watching random videos on YouTube or Netflix shows
- Soda/junk food/alcohol
- Harmful substances like weed or drugs
- Mindless interaction and small talk
- No social media (TikTok,YouTube, Instagram exception - if you are consuming positive content)
5) Justified expenses
Spend money on making your life more pleasant and easier and not buying Gucci or branded shit to impress people who you don't care about.
The priority should always be to spend money on improving the quality of your life before materialistic crap
Reward yourself by improving your equipment, making your office nicer and improving your quality of life.
You will be rewarding yourself but doing it in a way that is tax efficient because you can business expense it.
It also makes you want to work more and be focused.
Win-win.
Invest in things like hardwood stand-up desks and chairs.
Invest in better camera or audio equipment if you’re a content creator.
How to Track Monk Mode
Save monk mode protocol as wallpaper
Look at it everyday and at the end of each day.
Keep a track of how many days streak you have accomplished
Aim for 21 days in your 1st cycle because that’s how the duration it takes to form a habit.
Be selfish with your time and energy.
Learn to say no.
Say no to fun trips.
Say no to going out on dates.
Say no to vices until you build something.
Find friends like this who understand that you’re on monk mode.
Tell them that you can hang out once your Monk Mode has ended but until then, you’ve got work to do
If your friends force you to hang out with them or guilt trip you, they are not your true friends because true friends want the best for you.
Get to work.
Society wants you to live a balanced and average life.
But you and I both know that you are better than that.
Remember Balance = mediocrity.
It’s a myth you can have it all, do it all.
If you want to party and have fun… party.
If you want to make money and become a profitable trader… follow this protocol.
